Flyers battle Packers into OT at Leo Boivin
PRESCOTT - It was old-time hockey at its best tonight at the Leo Boivin Community Centre in Prescott as the hometown Flyers took on the league-leading Arnprior Packers in a match that gave CCHL2 hockey fans a night to remember.
Going into the game four points behind the Packers, Prescott needed a big game. The team in orange lost in overtime, but skated away with one point and gave notice that they can play with the best in the league. It was a wild affair.
Arnprior drew first blood just past the half way point of the opening period. Flyer sniper Devon Burns cashed in on a penalty shot at the 14:37 mark to even up the score. The packers continued their attack, netting another two goals to take a 3-1 lead back into the dressing room.
It was a lead that quickly vanished when the Flyers exploded for four goals before the second period was eight minutes old. Greg Heika, Drew Holmes each got singles with Brett Van Stralen netting two to give Prescott a 5-3 advantage early in the fight-filled middle frame. Not to be outdone, it was the Packers turn to score a bunch. Three goals later from the visiting team once again gave Arnprior the 6-5 edge as the period came to an end.
The chippy play continued in the third but the goal scoring slowed down. The lone marker of the final 20 minutes came from the stick of the Flyer's Carson Pickup while on the power play at 11:46. After 60 minutes of play it was 6-6 and this one would need extra time to decide a winner.
The visiting team ruined the party for the Prescott crowd just 27 seconds into the OT period, netting their own power play goal with the Flyers serving a bench minor for too many men on the ice. Final tally: Arnprior 7- Prescott 6.
The Flyers travel to Richmond for an afternoon match-up against the Royals on Sunday.
