Flight #644 lands with great opportunity for warmer travels

OGDENSBURG - The beaches of Florida just got that much closer and considerably more affordable.

That was the message delivered by Northern New York dignitaries and executives from Allegiant Air Lines at Ogdensburg International Airport. A crowd gathered for a ceremony hosted on Wednesday, October 5 at the recently renovated airfield, witnessed the arrival flight #644. The passenger plane was the first of many promised discount voyages to-and-from the sunshine state are now available to residents on both sides of the St. Lawrence River.

"This has got to be a positive factor for people's travel habits throughout the North Country and Ottawa markets," noted local radio host John Winters speaking to an audience of several hundred guests who took the time to attend the event. "Hopefully Ogdensburg can get a piece of that pie," he said.

Canadian travelers were the focal point of statements delivered from a number of the invited speakers. Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority Executive Director Wade Davis, praising his team for managing to expedite the original 10-year plan to expand the airport's capabilities into a three-year window, equated the time saved from travelling to air ports outside the immediate region could very easily translate to an extra day of vacation for travelers from both Canada and the US.

New York State Assembywoman Addie Russell stressed that while the initial focus is on the advantage to sun-worshiping vacationers, the benefits of tourism are available at both ends of the runways.

"This is the economic opportunity of the century," Russell said, outlining the possibility of luring tourists from Florida to enjoy the changing of the seasons and the splendor of the 1000 islands. "Regardless of whether you are in Southeastern Ontario or here in our Northern country, we have some world-class attractions to offer visitors."
